Acupuncture and Weight Loss

One of the most common questions I get as an acupuncturist (after "Does it really work?") Is: "Can acupuncture help me lose weight?" My first answer is, "No, but ..." No, because if someone tells you they dart the magic to help you lose weight, have quit smoking, stop being angry with your parents, stop biting your nails, etc., red flags should go, and you should automatically go the opposite direction. The truth is that there is no miracle cure to one of the above or any other myriad of things we wish we could "fix" with a quick and easy solution.

But even acupuncture helps to increase the body of the flow of blood and energy. This leads to better digestion, excretion, circulation, a solid increase in energy and in general and consistent sleep patterns. If all these things to flow freely and without hindrance, it tends to follow that a person weight safely, effectively and naturally easy to lose by using their body in order.

Acupuncture alone can not "make" you lose weight. Only you can make the lifestyle choices necessary to achieve deep, lasting weight loss. When I work with clients with the goal of losing weight, the first things we look at the reasons why they may have originally gained weight. Their lifestyle has become more sedentary? Why? Have they no longer enjoy doing what they in the past? They have taken on the role of caretaker and not have more time to devote to their own well-being? Are they eat because they are sad? Angry? Grieving? Bored? Have you gained weight because they drink more than they have in the past? Is it really overweight or just a distorted image of yourself?

Each person is unique and the reason they are overweight is individual to each person. There is no miracle cure, because there is no single cause and effect of weight gain. I work a good deal for nutritional and lifestyle counseling with my clients, but just as important, I'm just working with my clients. I will never underestimate the value of eating well and move the body every day, but it is equally important to recognize why a person does not like how they look, how they got to this point, and finally - and this is the most important - to realize that fat or thin, tall or short, straight or curly hair, it is to love everything about ourselves.

I'm a big proponent of being a "healthy" weight (and remember, "healthy" not look the same as the girls in the magazines). But who would you rather be around: a skinny man who is miserable because they restrict itself in every aspect of their lives, or a person with a few pounds, which is friendly, loving and happy because they enjoy life? I have my answer. Thank God we were not all built with bodies such as Twiggy....
