"Acupuncture is for Pain" Myth Busted!

As a holistic healthcare provider, my conversations with new acquaintances often end up touching the subject of health and wellness. Do not ask me why, but people really seem to love to talk about their health challenges. When it comes to that I am a licensed acupuncturist, I often hear something along the lines of "I hear that's really good for pain. Pity that it does not help my health concern {insert here}" I really love this point in the conversation. This is an invitation. Onto my soapbox and engage in some real patient outreach and education

Starts from destruction let's be honest: this myth exists for a reason. Acupuncture works really well for most types of pain. I'll go so far as to say it is the best treatment I know for chronic and acute pain. Let a few reasons acupuncture works so well look for pain:

1.
Side effects are beneficial - no feeling doped up

2.
It is very safe - as long as you see a qualified professional, you are practically zero chances of complications

3. It is not to make the problem worse - if surgery for back pain, you're just as likely to end up with more pain as less pain!

4.
It's working! - I would estimate conservatively that four out of five patients that I get to see significant relief quickly (many of the rest sometime relief but require a longer course of treatment - only about 1 in 3 patients relief from back surgery

5.
Moreover, it operates in many different types of pain. Acupuncture success in dealing with pain, which unfortunately has joined with the severity of the pain in our society, the myth that pain is acupuncture is good for ALL spawned. This could not be further from the truth.

Acupuncture is part of a time tested to diagnose and complete holistic system of medicine that uses natural, safe and effective techniques and to correct imbalances in the body. Western medicine gives us a general sense that most health conditions are caused by an imbalance in the body. For example, hormonal imbalances can irregular menstruation, can cause metabolic imbalances result in diabetes, and with a weak immune system makes a cold. In general, significant differences between acupuncture and Western medicine are two:

The View: an integrated functional abstraction compared to a reductionist understanding The method: use the bodies natural healing mechanisms to restore the balance in comparison to an imbalance masking with another.

Since most diseases and health concerns works by imbalances and acupuncture, they are advised by the body into balance, it is clear that acupuncture can treat most diseases.

Once people understand the basics of how acupuncture works, they always know how it's scope is huge and far beyond simple pain management. Once these clicks they understand how acupuncture can help them with their health concerns. This is often followed by either asking them "When can I make an appointment?" if they live locally or "Can you an acupuncturist in my area?" if they do not. Either way I'm happy. I've done my job. Another person will now proceed to improve the quality of their lives. Hopefully the word will have an amazing experience, and have passed on to others who has the help of acupuncture has to offer. After all, acupuncture can only help those who seek it....
