Acupuncture, Health Self-Defense and Modern Medicine: thoughts

Sometimes the questions at least assumptions can be misunderstandings. As an acupuncturist I practice natural healing and I often exchange invitations with western doctors. I believe that modern Western medicine is irreplaceable for some things.

With this in mind, here Thought Number One is irreplaceable is not the same as inviolable and for the sake of health! it is time that we stop confusing the two medical consumer.

Case in point: We all know the downsides of antibiotics and we also know their amazing performance. A new piece in the New York Times caught my attention because it addressed an unassailable assumption about antibiotics.

A typical course lasts 7 to 10 days. That's a lot of strong medicine. It is really a pity that we do not. Them for say 2 or 3 days with the same effect Or can we?

More than 4 1/2 years in March 2006, an article co-authored by 15 specialists presented an interesting study. In nine hospitals in the Netherlands doctors uncomplicated pneumonia treated with amoxicillin two different regimes. A course of treatment lasted three days, the other for 8 days. The results? No difference. Period.

Maybe this could be a major breakthrough. However, despite the multiplication of super bugs, individual resistance to antibiotics-up, high cost, etc, it seems no one has gone out of their way to spend big research dollars up on this.

As Daniel Gilbert, the NYT guest post, the number of days surveyed physicians prescribe antibiotics he came up with something so unscientific I had to laugh. Suffice it to say that the magic of seven days of antibiotics is doing pretty much just that.

Congratulations to Mr. Gilbert for questioning a sacrosanct assumption and thanks to the NYT for publishing is. Gilbert takes a conservative that even if only one pill is unnecessary antibiotics on a typical course: ".... millions of people who actually need at least 5 percent more drugs than they are"

I dare to compare this with acupuncture? No worries about over-prescription, over-needles or overreaction. No Super needles are formed, nor will you develop a resistance to the results. Your body dictates how much treatment you need and how often you need it. Acupuncturists are trained to, let your body do the work and then you can say it, the practitioner the next right steps for you.

This leads me to Thought number two. We are all experts on certain aspects of the body. What if we used this knowledge and applied basic research, self-defense techniques to our own bodies? An acupuncturist could not ask for a better way for people to hope to stay healthy.

The health-ninja approach would trust us to our natural instincts and seek preventive measures, treatments and remedies. We would gather knowledge about our bodies, to know what can harm us, and if necessary, act preemptively. We would empower us and gain a new appreciation of natural healing methods.

One reason acupuncture took over the millennia is that it stimulates the body's own healing powers. It works something like our own immune system protects us and support needs healing.

If we were more ninja-like than our own healing, acupuncture would be right there in the front, as we have a new twist to the ancient art of self-defense health....
